Chris "C-Rock" Gilday, an Avalon, NJ Surf Legend and South Jersey resident, passed away peacefully in his home, with his love and life partner, Joanne, and doggies, Peaches and Oria, January 7, 2017, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer in early October. He was 58 yrs. Chris was born August 20, 1958 in Wilmington, DE to Frank J. Gilday, M.D., and Marie Gilday. He began his 11 year career as a Lifeguard with the Avalon Beach Patrol, "Ruling the Kingdom of the Surf Beach" as once featured in a newspaper article. He was a professional deck builder/home improvements. He attended Broward Community College, FL. Chris was always full of love and laughter, and had unparalleled generosity and spirit and was always ready to help a friend with whatever he could to brighten their day. Chris was adored by many as a great friend, son, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great surfer. He learned to surf on the Jersey Shore and traveled all over the world surfing and sharing experiences with friends. Over the course of his life, he won many athletic competitions and lifeguard races. Chris was proud to be an original team rider and lifelong member of the famed New Vision Surf Team; Chris was best known for his power surfing and barrel riding. He enjoyed being coastal and the quietness of the off season at the shore. Chris enjoyed Allman Brothers concerts with his brother Michael and led an active life of surf trips, bike riding, swimming and walking his dogs until his last 2 wks. Chris adored his granddaughter, Callie, and encouraged and inspired her surfing; swim meets, softball, and athletics. He always had a fun story to share with her. They enjoyed also crabbing at Shell bay which he taught her, and desserts. Chris is survived by his love and life partner of 30 yrs. Joanne Cunningham, granddaughter, Callie, his two baby girls (dogs), Peaches @ .Oria. Siblings: Frank Gilday (Margaret, Frank, Brian, Lindsay); Kevin Gilday (Ria); Bonnie Gilday (April, Bobby, Christi); Michael Gilday (Michelle, Shaun, Justin, Chelsea); and preceded in death by his parents and nephews Terry Gilday and Stoney Graves. Also, Michael & Denise Cunningham, Rocky & Donna Graves & family, Eugene Gilday (Roxanne). Chris lived a lifetime of Love, kindness and passion for what he believed in. He inspired people to live what your heart Feels. Baby pumpkin ruled! A paddle out at 30th St. beach to Honor Chris will be announced in spring thru Cape May County Herald.
